EV fire safety for bus and fleet depots

The risk

A depot parks its vehicles close together, often on charge overnight, with a building behind them. If one battery goes into thermal runaway, the fire can spread to the vehicles next to it and to the building, at a time of night when nobody may be on site to see it start.

A lithium battery fire makes its own oxygen, so cutting off the air does nothing to it, and it can reignite hours or days after it looks out. The fire service puts it out, normally by cooling the pack with very large volumes of water over a long period.

What a Fire Cloak does

The Fire Cloak 8 x 6m contains a vehicle fire. Two people pull it over the vehicle, and it holds the flames, heat and smoke underneath, which protects the vehicles either side and the building until the fire crew get there. It will not put a battery fire out.

Check the size against your fleet. The 8 x 6m blanket covers cars, compact vans and smaller 4x4s, so it suits pool cars, small vans and support vehicles. It is not big enough for a bus, a coach or a large van. If you run larger vehicles, list them in the form below and we will come back to you on what fits.

It is certified to DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 and rated A2-s1, d0 under EN 13501-1, and it comes in a waterproof IP65 bag that weighs 28kg with the blanket in it.

Before you buy

Call 999 first. A blanket goes on only as part of a written procedure, used by people trained on it: NFPA and UL FSRI research and an IAFF advisory (June 2025) warn of explosion risk from gas building up under a blanket on a battery fire. Anyone untrained should clear the area and wait for the fire service.
