What the markings mean
The standards, in plain English
-
1000V
IEC 60900 Insulated hand tools
The standard insulated tools are built and tested to. Each tool is proof tested at 10,000V so it can be rated for live working up to 1000V AC. A tool with a plastic handle and no marking is not an insulated tool.
-
Class 0
EN 60903 Insulating gloves
Class 0 gloves are rated for 1000V AC working. They need a visual and air test before every use, and retesting to schedule. Overgloves protect them from the mechanical damage that takes them out of service.
-
SB E
EN ISO 20345 Safety footwear
Electrical hazard rated boots. Standard safety boots are not the same thing, and steel through the sole is the opposite of what you want near a traction battery.
Certification belongs to the product, not the brand. Check the marking on the item itself and keep the certificate with your records.
Questions worth asking
If yours is not here, email us and you will get a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.
Do I need IMI TechSafe registration to buy this kit?
No. Anyone can buy it. Whether you should be using it is a different question, and that depends on your training and your employer's safe system of work, not on what a shop will sell you.
Can I use my normal socket set if I am careful?
Not on a live high voltage system. An uninsulated tool bridging a 400V pack is what the insulation exists to prevent, and being careful is not a control measure. Isolate first, prove dead, then work.
How often do insulating gloves need retesting?
Six months is the usual interval for gloves in service, and they need a visual and air test before every single use. Gloves in unopened storage have a longer window. Follow the manufacturer's schedule and record it.
Do you sell to the trade and to private owners?
Both. Prices show inclusive of VAT so they are the final figure for a private buyer. If you are a VAT registered garage you will see the ex VAT figure alongside once our VAT registration is live.
