Fire Blankets

A lithium traction battery in thermal runaway is not a fire an extinguisher puts out. It generates its own oxygen and it reignites. What a fire blanket buys you is containment and time: it limits the spread to neighbouring vehicles and the building while the fire service gets there.

Any workshop taking in damaged or recovered EVs should have a plan for where a suspect vehicle sits, how far it is from anything else, and what goes over it.

Common questions

Will a fire blanket put an EV fire out?

No, and nothing sold as workshop equipment will. A traction battery in thermal runaway produces its own oxygen. The blanket contains the fire and slows the spread so the damage stays to one vehicle.

How long do we need to quarantine a damaged EV?

Common practice is a minimum of 24 to 48 hours in a designated area away from buildings and other vehicles, because reignition can happen long after the initial event. Check what your insurer requires, because they often set a longer period.

Are these single use?

Most are rated for a number of deployments and must be inspected after any use. Treat one that has been over a fire as spent unless the manufacturer says otherwise in writing.
