Test Meters

Proving dead is a three step job and it needs the right instrument: prove the tester works on a known source, test the circuit, then prove the tester again. A meter that failed silently between the second and third step is the reason the third step exists.

Category rating matters as much as the voltage range. A meter rated CAT II is not suitable for this work regardless of what number it can display.

Common questions

What CAT rating do I need for EV work?

CAT III as a minimum for traction system work, and CAT IV where the risk assessment calls for it. The rating describes how much transient energy the meter can survive, which is a different question from the voltage it can read.

Why do I need a separate proving unit?

Because a dead reading and a broken meter look identical. A proving unit gives you a known live source to confirm the meter still works immediately after you have used it to declare something dead.
