PPE and Personal Safety

The personal protective equipment for EV work is not the same as general workshop PPE, and the gloves are the part people get wrong most often. Class 0 insulating gloves to EN 60903 are rated for 1000V AC working, need a visual and air test before every single use, and go back for retest to a schedule.

Leather overgloves are not optional extras. They protect the insulating glove from the mechanical damage that takes it out of service, which is what ends most gloves' lives.

Common questions

How often do insulating gloves need retesting?

Six months is the usual interval for gloves in service, on top of a visual and air test before every use. Unopened gloves in storage have a longer window. Follow the manufacturer's schedule and record each test.

Are normal safety boots good enough?

No. You want electrical hazard rated footwear to EN ISO 20345 with the EH or SB E marking. Standard boots with a steel midsole are the opposite of what you want near a traction battery.

Do I need arc flash protection to work on a car?

It depends on the job and on your employer's risk assessment. Isolation and disconnection work at pack level is where it is normally specified. Ask the person who wrote your safe system of work, not a shop.
