EV charging cables

Which charging cable do I need?

Most UK electric cars need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m long, rated 7.4kW. Answer three questions below and we will tell you if yours is one of them, and exactly what to buy if it is not.

Every cable we sell is built to order in the UK by Wottz and tested before it is sent. Pick the wrong one and you either pay for speed your car cannot use or end up with a cable that will not reach, so it is worth two minutes to get it right.

Find your cable in three questions

Tell us the car, what you need it for and how far it has to reach. We will tell you the cable, the rating and the length, and why.

Which charging cable do I need for my car?

For almost every electric car sold in the UK since 2018, a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Choose 7.4kW if your car charges at up to 7.4kW on AC or you only charge at home, and 22kW if it charges at 11kW or 22kW and you use public posts. Older Type 1 cars, such as the 2011 to 2017 Nissan Leaf and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, need a Type 1 to Type 2 cable. The finder above works it out for your car.

Is the 22kW cable worth the extra money?

Only if your car's onboard charger is rated 11kW or 22kW and you charge on public posts, most of which are three phase. At home, UK supplies are single phase, so the 7.4kW cable already gives full speed. The 22kW cable works everywhere the 7.4kW one does, so it is also the safe buy if you might change car soon.

Will these cables fit a Tesla?

Yes. UK Tesla Model 3 and Model Y cars have a Type 2 socket, so they take the Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Most versions charge at 11kW on AC, so the 22kW cable gets the full rate on public posts.

What length should I choose?

5m suits most people and every normal public bay. For home, measure the route from the wall box to the charge port along the ground, round the car, then add a metre or two of slack: under 3m needs 5m, up to about 5m needs 7.5m, and up to about 8m needs 10m.

Does the colour make any difference?

Not to charging. Blue and yellow are easier to see on a dark driveway or in a car park, which helps stop people tripping over the cable.

How quickly will my cable arrive?

Each cable is built to order in the UK by Wottz and tested before it is sent, usually within 2 to 3 working days. Delivery is a flat £9.90 on cable and charger orders.

Do I need my own cable for rapid chargers?

No. Every rapid charger in the UK has its own cable fixed to it. Your own cable is for public AC posts and wall boxes that have a socket instead of a cable.
