EV charging cables
Long EV Charging Cables, Type 2, 10m to 50m
Type 2 charging cables from 7.5m to 50m, and Type 1 to Type 2 cables up to 10m, built to order in the UK. The price for every length is below.
Our Type 2 charging cables are built to order in lengths up to 50m, and Type 1 to Type 2 cables up to 10m. A long cable charges just as fast as a short one, because each is rated for its full current along its whole length. What changes is the weight, the bulk and the price, so buy the length the route needs and no more.
How to measure
Park where you normally park. Measure from the wall box socket to the car's charge port along the ground, round the car, not in a straight line. Then add a metre or two of slack so the plug is never pulled tight.
- Under 3m of route: 5m
- 3m to about 5m: 7.5m
- 5m to about 8m: 10m
- 8m to 10m: 12.5m
- Over 10m: a longer cable works, but moving the wall box or fitting a tethered one is often neater and cheaper
Never use an extension lead
If the cable will not reach, buy a longer charging cable. Do not put a charging cable or a granny charger on a household extension lead or a cable reel. They are not built to carry that current for hours, and that is how plugs and sockets overheat.
If the cable has to cross a pavement, ask your council first. Many do not allow it, and the ones that do expect a proper cable cover. At home, a wall mounted holder keeps up to 15m of cable coiled and off the ground.
Not sure which cable your car needs? The cable finder works it out in three questions, and our guide explains which EV charging cable you need in full.

Long charging cable questions
Not answered here? Call 01376 800235 or email hello@theevpros.com and we will help you pick the length.
What is the longest EV charging cable you can buy?
We sell Type 2 to Type 2 cables up to 50m and Type 1 to Type 2 cables up to 10m, each built to order. Over about 10m of route, moving the wall box or fitting a tethered one is usually neater and cheaper than a very long cable.
Does a longer EV charging cable charge more slowly?
Not in any way you will notice. A properly built cable is rated for its full current along its whole length. The cost of a longer cable is weight, bulk and price.
Can I use an extension lead to charge my electric car?
No. Household extension leads and cable reels are not built to carry charging current for hours, and that is how plugs and sockets overheat. If your cable will not reach, buy a longer charging cable.
What length EV charging cable do I need?
5m for public charging and most driveways. For home, measure the route from the wall box to the charge port along the ground, round the car, and add a metre or two of slack: under 3m needs 5m, up to about 5m needs 7.5m, up to about 8m needs 10m, and 8m to 10m needs 12.5m.
Is a long cable a good idea for public charging?
It works, but it is heavier to carry and leaves more cable on the ground in a car park. If you charge at home and on public posts, a long cable for the drive and a 5m one in the boot is a sensible pair.
